The Legal Helpline offers confidential general legal assistance and information across any area of law — available from 8:00 a.m. to midnight local time and 24/7 for emergencies.
Have a contract question? Whether a contractor didn’t deliver, or a product arrived damaged, a lawyer can explain your legal options and what to say in a dispute.
Unsure what to do about a property issue? If a neighbour has built over your property line or is causing a nuisance, a lawyer can walk you through your rights and next steps.
Need help after a disrupted trip? If a visa error or booking mistake caused you to miss your travel plans, get assistance on what recourse you may have.
Have a workplace concern? Whether you’ve been let go or are facing issues at work, a lawyer can help you understand your position and how to respond.
Getting audited? If you’ve been contacted by the CRA, a lawyer can guide you through what to expect and how to prepare.
Thinking about writing a will? A helpline lawyer can guide you through the legal requirements and help you understand what to include.
We encourage you to call as often as needed.
Here’s what to expect:
When calling the helpline, you will first speak with an intake agent who will ask for:
- Your name, province, and phone number
- Your policy number
- The nature of your legal inquiry
- Consent for a lawyer to leave a voicemail if needed
If a lawyer is not immediately available, the intake agent will request three preferred 2-hour time slots for a callback. You will then receive a Case Number for reference.
A lawyer will return the call within 24-72 hours, making up to three attempts during the provided time slots. If voicemail consent is given, a message will be left if needed. If all attempts are missed, you can call the helpline with your Case Number to reopen their request.
